Scott R. Hastings, 99, of Bucyrus died Monday, December 4, 2023 at home under the care of his family and SouthernCare Hospice.
Mr. Hastings was born in Redondo Beach, California on January 20, 1924 to the late Scott and Pearl (Shreve) Hastings. The family moved to Eugene, Oregon when Scott Jr. was six years old. Scott is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Blicke) Hastings, whom he married in 1993.
Scott graduated from Eugene High School and graduated from Oregon State University in Corvallis in 1949 with a BS in Engineering. He was employed by the General Electric Co. for 40 years at various GE locations including Engineering positions in Erie, Penn., Pittsfield, Mass., Lynne, Mass., and Cleveland, Ohio. He was Plant Manager of the GE Plant in Niles, Ohio. He was appointed Plant Manager of the GE Bucyrus Glass Plant and moved to Bucyrus in 1970, retiring in 1987.
He was a veteran of WWII in the US Navy Air Corps as a Lieutenant and pilot. He flew PBY aircraft while stationed on the island of New Guinea in the South Pacific. He was an American history buff and believed very strongly in America’s freedom. He had collected many American history documents and sayings which he made into a presentation that was given many times as a patriotic program for various community organizations.
Scott was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Bucyrus. He was two times president of the Bucyrus Rotary Club and past president of the Bucyrus Shrine Club. He served as secretary of the Bucyrus Salvation Army Board for several years. He received 50-year pins in both the Masonic Lodge and the Aladdin Shriners. Scott was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Past President of the Bucyrus United Way, past member of the Bucyrus Community Foundation, the Bucyrus Hospital Board, and Bucyrus Chamber of Commerce. He was inducted into the Crawford County Golden Years Hall of Fame in 2000, and former head of the senior volunteers at the Crawford County Court House called TRIAD.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Imogene (Drake) Hastings and daughter, Ronda Lorain Hastings. In addition to wife, Mary Lou; Scott is survived by his daughters, Leesa Hastings and Darla Hastings.
On Friday, December 8 at Wise Funeral Service, Masonic Rites will be observed at 2:30 pm and friends may call from 3-6 pm. His funeral service will begin at 12 Noon on Saturday, December 9 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jeremy McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors by the US Navy Honor Guard and Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
Memorial donations are encouraged to be made payable to the Humane Society serving Crawford County and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on the guestbook.
