Sam Discioscia

Sam DiScioscia, 84, of Bucyrus, who had been in failing health for a number of years, died Monday, September 12, 2016 at his residence.

He was born May 2, 1932 in Gloversville, New York to the late Joseph and Jane DiScioscia. At the young age of 17, Sam’s sister convinced him to enlist in the US Army and he was always grateful for this advice. He began working as a cook in mess halls and eventually worked his way up to a chef and became a General’s aide, where he prepared meals for the “top brass.” He served in both Korea and Vietnam and honorably retired in 1975 following over 25 years of service to his country.

Sam married Joyce Ann Phillips in 1987 in Virginia and they moved to Bucyrus in 1991 to be closer to her family. Sam was a good hearted man who loved making people laugh. He and Joyce loved fishing anywhere there was something to catch. He enjoyed working around the house and will be remembered by many for furniture he built over the years. Sam also put his cooking skills to the test as he enjoyed hosting cookouts for family and friends. He was a member of VFW Post 8999.

In addition to Joyce, his wife of 29 years, Sam is survived by three children, Dick DiScioscia, Donald (Karen) DiScioscia and Debbie (Bob) Ross as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Vinnie; two brothers, Danny and Joseph DiScioscia and two stepsons, Edgar Layne, Jr. and Craig Layne.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Schaffer and eight siblings.

A private gathering was held at Wise Funeral Service where full military rites were provided by the US Army Honor Guard. Memorial contributions can be given to Wounded Warrior Project through the funeral home.
