Roger W. Scott Sr.

Roger Wesley Scott, Sr., 87, died Monday afternoon, July 14, 2025 due to complications following a recent fall.

He was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, on November 3, 1937. He was the only child of the late Wesley W. and Christa B. (Hill) Scott. Roger grew up on the Ohio River and always had great respect for nature. He met Janice L. Van Sickle at the Bob Evans Drive-In and they were married on January 19, 1959.

Roger was an exceptional student at Gallia Academy High School and a proud Ohio University Bobcat where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. His career brought him to Bucyrus, Ohio, in 1970 where he worked for General Electric in various positions and retired as a Manager of Quality Control. He was held in high regard for his hard work.

Roger will be remembered for being exceptionally honest and fair. He was authentic and highly intelligent. He was a perfectionist who strived for excellence in all his endeavors. Roger demonstrated his care through service and volunteered his time preparing taxes with VITA and building access ramps for those in need.

His interests included hunting, fishing, shooting sports, bicycle touring, and playing golf. He organized annual fishing trips to Canada for his family, building cherished memories for all who attended.

In recent years, Roger enjoyed morning coffee with friends, playing euchre with family, and going out to eat. He was a fierce competitor in the family's ice cream cookoffs. At home, he watched the birds and made sure the squirrels were well-fed.

Roger is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janice Scott; children, Michael (Marsha) Scott and Barbara (Daniel) Wirebaugh; daughter-in-law, Dawn Scott; grandchildren, Erin (Tim) Johnson, Ryan (Sara) Scott, Katie (Chase) Culiver, Ashlyn Scott, Jerica Shriver (Tommy Graham), Kayla (Zachary) Space, Stephanie Scott, Micah Wirebaugh (Bailey Dixon), Seth Wirebaugh, and Sydney Wirebaugh; step-grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Paul) Rowlen and Nathan Anders; as well as numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest son, Roger W Scott, Jr. and stillborn son, Daniel Lee Scott.

Services for Roger Scott will be held on Saturday, July 19 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus, Ohio. Family will receive friends from 2-3:55 pm and his funeral will begin at 4:00 pm with Reverend Kimberly Weissman officiating. He will be laid to rest privately in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire Township, Ohio.
