Rev. Joseph P. Platt

Rev. Joseph Platt, 88, of Bucyrus, Ohio, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones Wednesday, October 8, 2025. He was born on February 23, 1937, in Findlay, Ohio, to Joseph Parker and Vina M. (Porter) Platt.

Joe was previously married to Norma (Nyland) Platt in 1957. In 1981, he married Mary (White) Platt who survives him.

Joe loved his entire family and carried each of his children in his heart, regardless of distance or time. His greatest joy came from the time he spent with his close family creating cherished memories filled with love, laughter, and togetherness.

He is survived by his children and stepchildren: Nora Lee Platt of Rawson, OH; Bob Platt of Las Vegas, NV; Jennifer (Rob) Cromwell, III of Powell, OH; Terry (Courtney) Adams of North Bend, WA; Shelly (Rick) Niese of Crestline, OH; Kristina (Terry) Hedge of Las Vegas, NV; Heather Platt Zeisloft of Las Vegas, NV; and Wendy (Warren) Johnson of Delaware, OH. Joe also leaves behind: sister, Pat Swinehart; brother, Jim Platt; sister-in-law, Sue Platt; sister-in-law, Ann Hedrick; brother-in-law, Gene (Judy) White; brother-in-law, Roger (Joan) White; sister-in-law, Susan (Jim) Rabold; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, many nieces and nephews, and extended family with whom he shared lasting memories filled with laughter and love. He is proceeded in death by his parents; brother, John Platt; and brother-in-law, Doug Hedrick.

A man of deep faith, integrity, and quiet wisdom, Joe dedicated his life to ministry, service, and meaningful connection. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and later earning a Gold Palm in recognition of his continued service within his Scout unit. He also attended the renowned Philmont Training Center, further deepening his commitment to Scouting. Academically, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wittenberg University, followed by a Master of Divinity from Hamma School of Theology and a Master of Christian Education from Ashland Theological Seminary.

He began his pastoral career in the Lutheran Church, serving congregations in Newport, Kentucky, and Findlay, Ohio. Joe worked for Ford Motor Company as a personnel manager for several years before he answered a renewed call to ministry through the United Methodist Church. Over the years, he faithfully served churches in Lexington, Shelby, Crestline, and Saybrook, Ohio, retiring in 2000. Retirement didn’t slow him down—he and his wife Mary embraced a life of mission work with RVICS (Roving Volunteers in Christ’s Service,) traveling the country in their motor home and helping communities through construction and ministry projects.

In 2002, Joe returned to the pulpit to serve Martel United Methodist Church, and later began serving his final church, St. John’s in Bucyrus, officially retiring in December 2019. Even after stepping back from full-time ministry, he continued serving churches, teaching Bible studies, and offering spiritual guidance to many. He also served with care and compassion at Mark Schneider Funeral Homes in Crestline and Galion.

Joe made lasting friendships in every community and church he served. His genuine kindness, quick wit, and ability to listen deeply left a mark on all who knew him. He treasured moments big and small—family gatherings, camping trips, summers at his family cottage on Lake Erie, singing hymns, attending Emmaus weekends, and having Mary by his side for the past 44 years.

He lived a life of faith, service, and quiet strength. His presence will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered.
