Raymond G. Patterson

Raymond G. Patterson, 84, died early Friday, March 25, 2022 at Carlisle Place where he received great care in recent weeks after a few months of failing health.

He was born in Galion on July 6, 1937 to the late Maurice and Flossy (Curren) Patterson. Ray grew up playing sports and causing mischief with his brothers on the family farm in New Winchester. He went to Whetstone High School where he was known as “Bones” for being so thin. He played basketball and baseball for the Hornets and graduated in 1956. He began working at North Electric before spending 20 years at The Timken Co. and then working in maintenance at GE from which he retired.

Ray will be remembered for loving his family and sports. He was always active, playing recreational basketball into his 60s, officiating basketball, golfing, riding motorcycles, and working out daily in his home gym. He also raced dirt bikes when his girls were young and loved both his 1972 and 1991 Corvettes which he used to chauffer his grandchildren for parades and events. He never strayed far from Crawford County where he attended every sporting event he could, especially where he could support his grandchildren. Ray was also a wood carver and hunter, loved the company of his dog, Kit, and talked to his daughters and brother, Bill, every day. His one-liners were memorable and numerous.

Ray grew up worshiping in the New Winchester EUB and was a member of Woodlawn UMC. He was an active member and Past Master of the Bucyrus Masonic Lodge. Member of Bucyrus Shrine Club, former officer of Elks Lodge #156, and enjoyed driving with fellow Corvette owners.

Ray is survived by daughters, Kim (Quinten) Boyd and Kelli Patterson (Jamie Tussey); grandchildren, Alyssa Burcher, Stefan (Ashton) Boyd, Aubrey (Tyler) Brause, Karys Boyd, Shelbee Linn, and Christian Linn; great grandchildren, Arlowe, Atlas, Turner, Jayde, and Bennett; siblings, Carl (Joan) Patterson, Milton “Dit” Patterson (Barbie Rivera), Bill Patterson, and Kay Hedges; dear friend, Margaretha Robinette; along with cherished extended family, lodge brothers, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandson-in-law, Adam Burcher; brothers, Donald and Ralph Patterson; and brother-in-law, Roger Hedges.

All services will be at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Masonic Rites will be held on Wednesday March 30 at 4:30 pm and Ray’s family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-8 pm. The funeral will be held Thursday at 11:00 am with Pastor Sean McLeod officiating and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations are encouraged to be made payable to Bucyrus Shrine Club or Bucyrus Athletic Boosters and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Ray’s Tribute Wall.
