Patrick Raymond McCall, 90, died Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Altercare of Bucyrus after months of failing health.
He was born August 31, 1931 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to the late Harold W. and Veronica A. (Drajna) McCall. After graduating from Central High School in Minneapolis in 1949, Ray worked for The Dayton Co. (parent company of Target Stores) until 1958 when he became a Franciscan Brother. He moved to Bucyrus in the late 60s and became employed at United Church Directories/Lifetouch where he worked for 28 years before retiring on December 20, 1996.
Ray was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Resurrection Choir for many years. He was the wedding coordinator at the parish and assisted many brides over the years with planning their wedding ceremony. He was a former member of the diocesan music committee of Toledo in the 1980s. He was on Holy Trinity’s Liturgical Committee for over 30 years. Ray assisted each pastor that was assigned to the parish and taught Parish School of Religion classes for about 10 years during the pastorate of Fr. Tim Downey.
As an avid history and train buff, Ray became an active member of the Bucyrus Historical Society in 1994. He joined the society’s board in 1995, wrote and edited the newsletter since 1996, manned the office since 1997, gave tours, interviewed on radio broadcasts, served as the current VP, and authored “Ray’s Reflections of Bucyrus History.”
Ray enjoyed traveling by bus or railroad to visit family in Minnesota. He was a huge motorcoach and railroad buff, especially Amtrak. He was inducted into the “Golden Years Hall of Fame” by the Crawford County Council on Aging in 2018. Ray also loved his former canine companions, Oscar, Tippy, and Sage. His inquisitive nature and pesky personality will be noticeably absent in and around Bucyrus, but we can be grateful for his dedication to his faith and his community.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Griewski and his longtime companion and love of his life, Germaine Flock. He is survived Germaine’s daughter, Donna (Jim) Szalay of Brunswick; Donna’s children, Kristen (Brad) Divis and Ryan Szalay; Kristen’s children, Jason, Dominic, and Joshua Divis. Also surviving are his niece, Julie Ann Fischer of Lakeville, Minn. and her children, Trent and Griffen Fischer; many cousins; and his close special friends, Dana & Tom Walkins, Pete (Susan) Maynard, and Michelle (JR) Mellott.
A viewing will be held at Wise Funeral Service on Wednesday, June 8 from 4-7 pm. The evening will conclude with a prayer service at 7:00 pm led by Deacon Julius Fritz. On Thursday, June 9 at 11:00 am, Ray’s Funeral Mass will be held in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. Paul Fahrbach officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 pm in St. Bernard Cemetery, New Washington.
Ray requested donations in lieu of flowers be made payable to Bucyrus Historical Society, Humane Society Serving Crawford County, or Holy Trinity Church Choir.
Memories and photos can be shared on Ray’s Tribute Wall.
