Randall L. Hughes

Randall L. Hughes, 59, of Lancaster, died on Friday, January 20, 2023, at Fairfield Medical Center.

Randy was born July 28, 1963 to the late Harry and Betty Hughes in Bucyrus, Ohio. He graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1982 and then served in the Navy as a Radioman 3rd Class from 1982 to 1986, serving an additional two years in the reserves. Randy earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from The Ohio State University in 1993 which led to his love of the Buckeyes and all things related to Ohio State.

Randy worked at Bob’s Sandwich Shop selling bratwurst on the street corner in his younger days. He would sing the bratwurst song to anyone who would listen. He loved Bucyrus and especially enjoyed the Bratwurst Festival. He started his career in 1999 in the call center with AEP and eventually was promoted to dispatcher.

Randy spent a lot of his time through the 1990s and 2000s going on annual fishing trips with his dad and brothers, mushroom hunting, watching lots of Ohio State football and being his daughter’s biggest supporter. Fishing was his favorite pastime, but he also loved being with his church family at The Bridge and gardening every summer when he made a mean batch of sauerkraut in the basement.

Randy is survived by his daughter, Megan Hughes; brothers, Chuck (Melanie) Hughes, Steve (Linda) Hughes, and Rick (Erin) Hughes; nieces & nephews, Melissa (Kyle) Renfro, Jennifer (Jeremy) King, Steven Hughes, Chris Hughes, Mike (Kelsey) Hughes, Matt (Brooke) Hughes, Bill (Becca) Hughes, Lindsay (Joe) Ormsby, Ali (Brian) Fulcher, and Joel (Christine) Warren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Hughes.

Services will be held on Saturday, January 28 and Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 10-10:55 am. Military Honors by the US Navy Honor Guard and his memorial service with Pastor Scott Gibson officiating will begin at 11:00 am. Randy was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan so if you wish, wear your favorite Ohio State gear to celebrate his young life well lived.

Memorial contributions may be made payable to Ohio AMVETS Charities or the charity of your choice and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos are encouraged on Randy’s Tribute Wall.
