Norma Jean Hill

Norma Jean Hill, 87, of Bucyrus died Thursday, December 15th, 2022 at the OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio from injuries sustained in a fall a few days earlier.

She was born March 4th, 1935 in Barberton, Ohio to the late Richard and Grace (Copley) Norton. Norma was a 1953 graduate of Lancaster High School, where she was a standout student. After graduating, Norma was wooed by, and eventually agreed to marry Norman F. Hill, of Stoutsville, Ohio. They were married on July 23, 1955 and therein began their great partnership together that spanned the next six and a half decades. In 1965 they moved to Bucyrus. Once there, in addition to successfully raising eight children and working as an income-tax consultant, Norma was very active in both her church and the Bucyrus community.

Norma’s volunteer efforts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church included the choir and numerous major holiday drives including their Christmas Bazaar. Her customized chocolate covered peanut butter Easter eggs were legendary as were her custom painted old world resin Christmas Santa figures. Her community service included being an elected member of City Council, Ward 2 from 1998 to 2011. During her time on the Council and her community volunteer work outside the Council she amassed a long list of successful community projects to her credit. These included redistricting the ambulance service so townships could join with Bucyrus for better service, the Crawford County Family and First Council, the Crawford County General Health District Board, the Board of Trustees of Central Joint Ambulance District, Crawford County Contact, the “Speak Easy” where Al Capone visited, and being appointed to the Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging. Additionally, in 2012 Norma was honored for her many years of service on Bucyrus City Council with the dedication of the city playscape. The dedication was to "all the children of the city" and in recognition for her diligence in being a "strong advocate for the city parks." Norma absolutely loved Bucyrus, both the city and the people.

Norma is survived by her brothers Richard “Bud” Norton and Edward “Ted” Norton as well as her children, Cristy Hill (Richard Mizer), Gregory (Christine) Hill, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Hill, Julie Erickson, Cynthia (Michael) Scruggs, and Michael (Veronica) Hill; her daughter-in-law, Leslie Hill; 10 grandchildren, Curt (Amber) Courtad, Jordan Scruggs, Zachary (Danielle) Scruggs, Erin (Drew) Mizer Helton, Ian Erickson, Bailey Hill, Lucas Hill, Alicia Hill, Isabella Hill, and Emma Hill; three great grandchildren, Grant and Reese Courtad, and Will Scruggs, in addition to many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norman, her daughter Cathy Courtad, her son Douglas Hill, her parents Richard and Grace, her sister Patricia (Norton) Maddux, and her son-in-law Charles Erickson.

A funeral mass for Norma and Norman will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday, March 4th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bucyrus and a committal service will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
