Mike Briggs, 74, of Marion, passed peacefully on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at Marion General Hospital following a hard fought battle with liver cancer.
He was born June 22, 1949 in Marion to the late Clarence E. and Donna M. (Trimmer) Briggs and was a 1967 graduate of Bucyrus High School. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted to serve in the Army during Vietnam. Mike’s training occurred at Fort Huachuca where he specialized in Communications. He then spent the remaining portion of his service time in Vietnam. He was proud to have been able to serve his country and upon returning home from the service, began working Maintenance at Whirlpool. His strong work ethic shown through to those around him for his 43 years with the company.
Mike had a great love for music and he found this enjoyment in his early teens. During his high school years, he played in garage bands and was a member of The Torn Pages which became The Knights of Day. His music of choice was 60s and 70s rock and he enjoyed his fair share of concerts over the years. Mike shared this love of music with his brother and his daughters. In more recent years, he was often referred to as “Mr. Music” as his knowledge of songs and bands was second to no one. Golf was another passion that kept him going. Up every day and out the door for his coffee and round of golf at the Golf Club of Bucyrus or wherever else he decided to play that day. He enjoyed the Wednesday travel league and was proud to have carded two holes in one. In earlier years, he enjoyed bowling and he’s always enjoyed rooting for his Indians, Browns, and Buckeyes.
Mike enjoyed many good times gathering with family and he and Barclay looked forward to their long weekend getaways. Their trip to California was an amazing adventure and he and his daughters were blown away “Like a Hurricane” at the 2018 Neil Young concert. In 2021, he experienced one of his greatest joys when he did the Honor Flight to DC. He was always a neat and tidy kind of guy who loved socializing with others. He was quick witted, had a great sense of humor and did an amazing Mick Jagger impersonation.
Mike will be missed by many, including his wife, Barclay; children, Heather (Chad) Lynn, Desra (William) Wells and Natalie (Patrick Mulcare) Briggs, Stephanie (Dave) Smith and Ryan (Megan) Lawson; grandchildren, Jordan Wilson, Veena Wells, Cohen Cogar, Marley Wells, Stella Lynn, Taylor (Derek) Detwiler and Keith Smith; great grandchildren, Liberty Smith, and Damien and Mason Detwiler; brother, Gregory (Linda) Briggs; a niece and nephew, Gretchen (Sam) Hart and Beau Michael (Melissa) Briggs as well as many close friends.
All services for Michael will be held on Tuesday, July 11. Memorial calling hours will be from 10 – 12 noon at Wise Funeral Service, where his memorial service will begin at 12:00 noon with Certified Celebrant Lisa Snyder officiating. Inurnment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where full Military Rites will be provided by the Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail and the Army Honor Guard.
If desired, donations can be made payable to any preferred Veteran or Military organization or a charity of the donor’s choice. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home and expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on his tribute wall.
