Michael A. Sand

Mike Sand, 72 of Nevada, passed peacefully on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mike was born October 16, 1948 in Bucyrus to the late Milford and Mary “Ollie” (Kintz) Sand and was a 1966 graduate of Buckeye Central High School. On May 24, 1969, he married Rosemary Scruggs, who thought he was the most handsome man, even before he had asked her out. She survives and has cherished their 51 years of marriage.

Mike spent 38 years at Timken, working as a cone operator and spent the last portion of his career in the storeroom. He’ll also be remembered by many in his department as their “head cook”.

Mike loved the memories created with his family and was active in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He loved watching his son excel in football and proudly cheered for his daughter on the basketball court. In fact, sports were a strong second behind his family. Friday nights were reserved for high school, Saturdays for college and Sundays for professional sports. He followed Cleveland teams and Ohio State, but even if they weren’t playing, he felt empowered to drive the TV remote, so he could always fine a sport of interest to watch. He proudly supported Wynford Athletics and enjoyed his years striping the football field. Mike also loved hunting and fishing. He felt fortunate to hunt close to home and always shared with others and when it came to fishing, he and friends enjoyed many trips to Lake Erie and Canada.

Mike’s pride and joy was his apple trees and he cared for them just as he did his family. He grew a variety of apples that he shared with friends and family and every year, he along with their help, produced gallons of apple cider for many to enjoy.

Some of the other things Mike enjoyed were his many cruises with Rosie, time spent doing wood working projects and he spent many hours in his garden. He was considered quite the prankster and mastered the ability of getting a rise out of someone through his jokes.

Mike spent much of his life worshipping in the Lutheran church and in 2004, he started attending Trinity Evangelical UMC in Upper Sandusky. He was also a member of the Bucyrus Masonic Lodge, Bucyrus Shrine, where he was supportive of their projects and was a member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge.

In addition to Rosie, Mike is survived by children, Shane Sand and Kelly (Kyle) Stone; grandchildren, Shane Sand, Shelbi Sand, Schuyler Sand, Sawyer Sand, Maya Stone and Kanon Stone; siblings, Ronald (Carolyn) Sand and Joyce Hessey as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.

Mike’s life will be celebrated privately, and he will be laid to rest in Nevada Cemetery. His family requests that donations be made payable to Trinity Evangelical UMC or to Heartland Hospice. These gifts will be accepted through Wise Funeral Service and photos and memories are encouraged to be shared on his tribute page at www.wisefuneral.com.
