Mary Snyder, 88, of rural Bucyrus, passed peacefully at Mill Creek in Galion following a recent stroke.
She was born September 7, 1935 at home in Columbus, Ohio to the late Frank and Irene (Knowles) Baumgardner. A few years later, their family moved to the Marion area and Mary graduated from Claridon High School in 1954. On May 28, 1961, she married Lawrence L. Snyder who recently preceded her in death on July 7, 2023.
Mary worked as a salesclerk and purchaser for the G.C. Murphy Co.; was an office secretary for both the Superintendent and the Vice Supt. of the Marion County Board of Education and from 1976 until retiring in 2004, she served as the Whetstone Elementary School secretary.
Mary was a lady who preferred keeping busy and she did so through baking and sending cards. A couple of her favorite sweet treats were her scotcheroos and cream puffs and no matter what the occasion, she warmed many hearts through her greeting cards sent. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she enjoyed spoiling them any chance she got. Mary looked forward to family gatherings, and her New Year’s Day feast of pork and sauerkraut was a special day. She’d fill their home with tables and squeeze in as much family and friends as would fit. For relaxation, she enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk and visited friends via the telephone, sharing some lengthy conversations.
Mary was of Baptist faith and shared her crafting talents with the youth during many Wednesday night Bible Club meetings. She attended church her whole life and had been attending Grace Point in Galion.
Mary is survived by children, Randy (Jeanine) Snyder and Nancy (Greg) Morrison; grandchildren, Jonathon Snyder, Josh Snyder, and Eric Morrison as well as her brother, Richard (Carol) Baumgardner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Irene; husband, Larry; and sisters, Hazel Cluff and JoAnn Parker.
A memorial visitation for Mary will be held from 4 – 7 pm Thursday, December 28 at Wise Funeral Service.
Her family specifically request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made payable to the Col. Crawford PTO or a charity of the donor’s choice. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home.
