Mary M. Sherk

Mary Sherk, 77, of rural Bucyrus, died on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born on August 30, 1948 in Bucyrus to the late, Ervin Karl “Abe” and Vernetta Grace (Kennedy) Stuckman. She was a 1966 graduate of Col. Crawford High School and on May 3, 1969, married Elger E. Sherk who survives.

Mary cared for her family as a homemaker, worked several years as an operator for United Telephone Company and will certainly be remembered by many families for the love and care provided to those she babysat. She devoted much of her life to the Liberty Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. and was their first female member. Mary was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus.

She and Elger enjoyed spending time together and over the years, stopped at nearly every area garage sale or flea market to add to her various collections. She liked to know what was happening in the lives of others and for relaxation, she often enjoyed an ice-cold Pepsi, while watching Gun Smoke or one of her other favorite TV shows.

In addition to Elger, her husband of 57 years, Mary is survived by sons, Jeremy Edward (Crystle nèe Fruth) Sherk, and Jamie Aaron Karl (Carissa nèe Leonhart) Sherk; step grandson, Zachary (Ryley) Leonhart; grandchildren, Morgan Jessica Sherk and Landon James Sherk; brother, Ronald “Pete” (Polly nèe Howard) Stuckman; brothers-in-law, Melvin E. Stuckert and Ernest Orville (Beth nèe Highland) Sherk as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded I death by a brother, Walter (Darlene nèe Ankney) Stuckman; sister, Norma Grace Stuckert and sister-in-law, Valerie Ann Smith nèe Sherk.

Her family will receive friends from 5 – 8 pm on Tuesday, July 7 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus, where her funeral will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday with Chaplain Joshua Kocher officiating and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

If desired, donations may be made payable to either Liberty Twp. VFD or to Southern Care Hospice and these gifts will be accepted through the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared at www.wisefuneral.com.
