Mary K. Kottyan, 86, of Upper Sandusky died on Thursday, October 1, 2026 in the presence of her loved ones.
She was born October 29, 1939 in Sandusky, Ohio and adopted by the late Ralph L. and Pauline (Cochran) Hinaman in 1945. After graduating from Holmes-Liberty High School in 1957, Mary attended Grant Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus. She married Edward J. Kottyan on September 15, 1978 and he preceded her in death in 1997.
Mary worked as a computer programmer/system analyst for United Ohio Insurance Co., Wooster Community Hospital, Hanna Paint Co., and the City of Bucyrus. She then served 20 years as Tax Commissioner of the City of Upper Sandusky and retired in 2005. She worked most recently at Fairhaven Community as a part-time receptionist.
Mary was very artistic, creating countless crafts and she owned and operated “Jewelry by Mary K.” A woman of faith, Mary was baptized, confirmed, and married as a longtime member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Bucyrus. Since living in Upper Sandusky she worshipped at First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed pastoral visits. She played in several bridge clubs, was a former member of Alpha Chapter of Tri Sigma Club, and served on the boards of Crawford County Community Concert Association, Upper Sandusky Community Library, and Fantasy of Lights.
Mary K. is survived by sons, Robert (Faith) Achtermann and Tracey (Julie) Achtermann; grandchildren, Joseph (Erin) Achtermann, Jordan (Khrista) Achtermann, Kya (Jon Furbush) Achtermann, Renee (Drake) Hicks, Kennedy (Chase) Crawford, Madison (Kyle) French; great grandchildren Kennedy, Colton, Olivia, Kalahan, Andreas, Mila, Luca, Charlee, Cameron, Claire, Elizabeth, Aubrie, Logan, and one expected; along with her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by infant daughter, Laura Dale Achtermann; sister, Marlene Crall; brothers-in-law, Donald Crall and Joseph Kottyan; and sisters-in-law, Mary Kottyan and Rosalie Droll.
All services will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends in the auditorium from 10-11:20 am and the funeral will beheld in the sanctuary at 11:30 am. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are encouraged to be made payable to Wyandot County Home, Upper Sandusky Community Library, or Good Hope Lutheran Church.
