Marlin E. Schifer

Marlin E. Schifer, 94, of Bucyrus, died Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born January 12, 1928 in Bucyrus to the late Albert E. and Lena M. (Ruth) Schifer and was a 1946 graduate of Holmes Liberty High School. On August 27, 1950, Marlin married Barbara J. Charleston and she survives.

Marlin worked for a short time at the Farm Bureau before taking a job at Driscoll’s Cadillac garage. The garage seemed like a perfect fit as Marlin had a passion for working on cars. When Timken came to town, he hired in and in addition to working on cars in his spare time, he spent nearly 40 years until retiring in February of 1990.

Marlin was a devoted family man who proudly put the needs of his family ahead of his own. He was proud to keep his dad’s farm equipment repaired and in good working order. He was always available to assist with a home project, repair a car and offered up some great advice while engaged with his loved ones. Marlin was a lifelong member of Good Hope Lutheran Church; the longest standing member of the Bucyrus Moose 669 and a member of Sons of the American Legion.

His love of cars drove him to be a huge fan of NASCAR and he enjoyed many trips to watch his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt Sr. In 1956 he built the home where they were currently living and for many years, he maintained a rather large garden, growing about anything that would help Barbara complete her fantastic meals. They shared a lot of travels and whether going N, S, E, or W, Marlin was always behind the wheel, taking them to their next destination. In earlier years, he and Barbara enjoyed square dancing and playing cards with friends.

In addition to Barbara, his wife of 71 years, Marlin is survived by sons, Michael (Joyce) Schifer and Larry (Shelly) Schifer; grandchildren, Chad Schifer, Nicholas (Georgia) Schifer and Nathan Schifer; one great granddaughter, Madeleine Marie Schifer as well as many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Schifer and six siblings, Howard, Willard and David Schifer, Jean Moore, Marcile Garrison and Carol Hartman.

A graveside funeral for Marlin will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, May 17 at Oakwood Cemetery with Vicar Tanyce Addison officiating. If desired, donations can be made payable to Good Hope Lutheran Church to benefit the stained-glass window fund. These gifts will be accepted through Wise Funeral Service and online memories are encouraged to be shared on his tribute wall.
