Lawrence Darrell Higginbotham, 79, of Sycamore, died July 12, 2020 at Avita Health System Bucyrus Hospital after a long battle with dementia.
Lawrence was born November 23, 1940 to the late Delbert Higginbotham and Avalee (Mallet) Meadows in Robertsburg, West Virginia. He attended Buffalo High School in West Virginia. Once he moved to the area, he started working at the Mansfield Brass and Aluminum Corporation in New Washington where he worked for 34 years before retiring. During his career he met Nancy Brown through a mutual acquaintance. What transpired was their marriage on July 8, 1976 and decades of mutual respect and undying love between the two.
Lawrence was a family man; his wife and kids were his pride and joy. They were the most important people in his life and his kids were his greatest accomplishment. Lawrence was a loving, gentle, compassionate man with a heart of gold. During his youth he had a small dog which he named Peanut since he was so tiny. When Lawrence was older, he had another dog named Lucky that was his canine companion for 20 years. He was known as a hardworking man who worked to provide for his family. After his retirement, he had 18 years to take up hobbies. He enjoyed fishing, hunting squirrels and rabbits with Lucky, and he took great care of his lawn. Lawrence loved to sing country music and some of his favorite artists he listened to were Marty Robbins, Johnny Hortan, and other old classic artists. He always made friends easily and during his later years they called him “Kool-aid” since he drank it so often.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years; sons David (Deb) Higginbotham of Bucyrus and Derrick (Trisha) Higginbotham; daughters Mary (Clarence) Skidmore of Chatfield, Robin (Richard) Hetler of Willard, Shell (Pete) Foley of Morristown, Tennessee, Danielle (Rick) Patton of Bucyrus, Kim (Vince) Vanicheck, Myra (Doug) Wright of Jacksonville, Florida, and Jeannie Yarborough of St. Albans, West Virginia; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters Rheba (Rick) Jividen of Robertsburg, West Virginia and Fay Ann Duff of Virginia; and brother John Higginbotham.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter Bernice Morris, grandson Shawn Higginbotham, and brother Don Higginbotham.
Please join the family at the luncheon held in memory of Lawrence at noon on Wednesday July 15, 2020 at the Bucyrus Freewill Baptist Church at 1676 Hopley Avenue, Bucyrus, Ohio, 44820. Memories and photos may be shared on Lawrence’s Tribute Wall.
