June Maxine Baker

June Maxine Baker, 91, died early Thursday, February 4, 2021 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital from complications after heart surgery.

She was born in Crawford County on October 27, 1929 to the late Henry Jr. and Margie L. (Kheune) Baker. June graduated in 1947 from Holmes-Liberty High School where she was known as “Max,” then furthered her education earning a bachelor’s degree from Fort Wayne Bible College and Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University. She returned to Crawford County where she was a teacher at Lykens, Mt. Zion, and Wynford Schools for 29 years until her retirement in 1992. Most of her career was spent teaching 6th grade and she remained close with fellow teachers as a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.

June will be remembered for her strong independence and deep faith. She was a member of Bucyrus United Methodist Church and was a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and Ever-Faithful Sunday School class member of the former Grace UMC. She had a kind heart and charitable spirit, with family and friends receiving regular cards and correspondence, usually on her favorite Peanuts stationery. She enjoyed traveling the Western US and its national parks being favorite destinations. After retiring, she got to visit both Hawaii and Alaska. At home, she was an avid reader, enjoyed old movies, and did a lot of needlework and sewing. She also did genealogy work, dabbled in photography, and collected carousel horses.

June is survived by brother, Jim (Ann) Baker of Plano, Texas. “Aunt Max” will also be missed by her beloved extended family including nieces and nephews, David (Karen) Walter, Denny (Annabelle) Walter, Rebecca Ward, John (Barbara) Baker, Donald Baker, and Norma Elick. She is also survived by 10 great nieces and nephews, 18 great-great nieces and nephews, and 2 great-great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Robert (Lucille) Baker and sisters, Donna (Junior) Walter and Shirley Baker.

The family would like to send a very special “Thank You” to Mike Thomas for being a wonderful neighbor to June and helping her out in so many ways over the years.
