Jerry L. Schiefer, 83, died Monday, May 20, 2024 at Marion General Hospital, after weeks of failing health, under the care of OhioHealth Hospice.
He was born on the family farm in Holmes Township on April 25, 1941 to the late Ivan and Mildred (Ross) Schiefer. Jerry loved farming and was a gifted basketball player. He and his brother Don were members of the heralded 1958 Holmes-Liberty team that finished as state runners-up. After graduating in 1959, Jerry worked briefly for Galion Iron Works before joining General Electric where he was employed for over 30 years and retired as a supervisor. It was also at GE where he met Joyce Goodwin. They were married November 14, 1964. Jerry’s true passion was farming and he was blessed to tend to his family’s farm.
Jerry was a hardworking, quiet family guy who was very particular and an excellent manager of his time. He took great satisfaction in woodworking and tinkering in the barn. He also looked forward to drives in his cherished 1972 Mustang convertible. He and Joyce took several memorable trips with a few cruises and a road trip to the Black Hills among his favorites. He was a member of Scioto UMC, Moose Lodge 669, and served in the Ohio National Guard.
Jerry is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joyce Schiefer; children, Tim (Patti) Schiefer and LeAnn (Earl) Hendricks; grandchildren, Jessica (Tyler) Allen, Kristin (Chris) Stuart, Matthew Schiefer, Jake Hendricks, Carlee (Ty) Kuntz, and Bradley (Ashley) Hendricks; great grandchildren, Carter & Nora Allen, Teagan & Sutton Kuntz, and Carter & Kendale Hendricks; brothers, Don (Barbara) Schiefer and Glen Schiefer; sister, Miriam (Jim) Barney; sister-in-law, Nancy Schiefer; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by brother, Paul Schiefer.
All services will be held at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 23 from 4-7 pm and the funeral will be on Friday at 11:00 am with Pastor Jim Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Brokensword Cemetery.
