Janis A. Ransom

Janis A. Ransom, 87, died Sunday evening, June 7, 2026 at Hilliard Assisted Living under the caring team of Capital City Hospice.

She was born in Bucyrus on January 18, 1939, the only child of the late Manfull A. and Ruth K. (Leuthold) Deare and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1957. She attended Webber College in Florida and Kent State University before mutual friends introduced Janis to Marlowe D. Ransom, whom she married September 19, 1959.

Janis will be remembered for her relaxed demeanor, pride in her family, and generous volunteerism. Before meeting Marlowe, Janis sang with Fred Waring & his Pennsylvanians. Her home was a welcoming and entertaining place, from her son’s friends to her own. She volunteered in the Bucyrus Community Hospital Gift Shop, BCH TWIG, Kingwood Center, and Bucyrus Historical Society. As a Breast Cancer survivor, she supported the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Janis also loved gathering with friends in her Red Hat Society and Bridge Club and always made time to follow her granddaughters’ sports and events. She was well informed and kept her mind sharp by solving countless crossword puzzles.

Janis is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jodi Ransom and twin granddaughters, Ellen Elizabeth Ransom and Stephanie Ashton Weykamp (husband Joe).

Services for Janis will be held on Friday, June 12 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 11 - 11:55 am and her funeral will begin at 12 Noon with Celebrant Lisa Snyder officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
