James David Steinhilber, 80, died Sunday, June 18, 2017 at Altercare of Bucyrus.
He was born June 20, 1936 at the family farm located on Knauss Road in Bucyrus to the late Jesse and Irene (Bolyard) Steinhilber. Jim was a 1954 graduate of Nevada High School where he excelled in baseball, basketball and track. He held the school record for most points scored in basketball and during his senior year of track, Jim became the state shot put champion, which he was very proud of. He married high school sweetheart, Eileen Corfman and she survives.
He grew up working with his dad on the family farm, eventually purchased and grew it in size. He also spent a number of years working at Swan Rubber. As a farmer, Jim put in long days and wasn’t afraid of hard work. He felt most satisfied once the crops were in and he was proud to have been able to support his family for so many years. During winter months, he tinkered around the farm but those months were often spent playing euchre with area farmers and Jim was known as the “euchre king” as he played to win and often could tell the outcome after a couple hands played. He also liked socializing with others as he bowled in various leagues.
Jim enjoyed life and saw to it that his family vacationed every year. He traveled all 50 states, 20 different countries and he more recently enjoyed wintering in Hawaii at Waikiki Beach.
He was a longtime member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church, formerly serving as a deacon and as a cemetery trustee. Jim was also a member of the Farm Bureau; served on the board of directors at the Federal Land Bank and was a volunteer firefighter at the Nevada firehouse.
In addition to Eileen, his wife of 63 years, Jim is survived by four children, Cynthia (Mark) Light of Bucyrus, Timothy (Lisa) Steinhilber of Princeton, NJ, Alisa Steinhilber of Seattle, Wash. and Brian (Pamela) Steinhilber of Bucyrus; six grandchildren, Annia Light Brown Wolfe (John), Tara Nye, Brianna Steinhilber and fiancé Ramon Sanchez, TJ Steinhilber, Jeffery (Amanda) Steinhilber and Anthony Steinhilber; eight great grandchildren, Nolan, Jonah, Garvey, Naomi, Trenton, Conner, Lyndsay and Trever. Also surviving are two siblings, Pat Reed of Bucyrus and Jack (Barbara) Steinhilber of West Lake Village, Calif. as well as five nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, June 24 at Wise Funeral Service. Funeral services for Jim will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Martin Luther Lutheran Church and his family will greet friends one hour prior. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made payable to Martin Luther Lutheran Church and given through the funeral home or at the church on the day of his funeral.
