James Edward Carpenter, 87, of Bucyrus, died on Friday, October 30, 2026 at his home following a recent battle with cancer.
Jim was born on June 7, 1939 in Bucyrus to the late Ralph Rain and Minnie Mae (Smith) Carpenter and was a 1957 graduate of Bucyrus High School. He spent several years working at Komatsu in Galion and also enjoyed helping his brother, Ray operate Carpenter Brother’s Trucking.
Though never called to active duty, Jim was proud to have served for six years in the Ohio Army National Guard. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge 669, Amvets Post 27 and a former member of the American Legion Post 181.
Jim cherished many years spent with his friend and companion, Pat Sherman. They enjoyed many travels together, including trips to Michigan, Hawaii, and really looked forward to wintering in Florida. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed many rounds at area courses as well as playing various courses throughout his travels. Fishing was another favorite pastime, and he created countless memories through the many trips to both Canada and the Outer Banks.
Jim will be remembered for his many witty “one liners” and loved joking with others. He looked forward to dining out with family and shared many meals at both The Lincoln Diner (Carolyn’s Kitchen) and Lulu’s. When their travels took them to the state up North, it became a priority to grab a meal at Tony’s in Birch Run, because who could go wrong with attempting to eat a pound of bacon with any meal! Jim enjoyed collecting hats and he was rarely ever seen without one on his head. He also found enjoyment in shopping online at Temu and for relaxation, he liked listening to old country or bluegrass music.
Jim is survived by brothers, Raymond (Kathleen) Carpenter and Richard (Loyce) Carpenter all of Bucyrus; nieces, Dawn Hedges and Jackie (Chris) Pappas; nephew, Mike Carpenter; and Pat’s children, whom he treated as his own, Doug (Terry) Stinehelfer, Jodi (Mike) Wappelhorst and Teri Slate (Lee Haefer).
In addition to parents and his longtime companion, Pat Sherman, Jim was preceded in death by half-brothers, John, Hugh and Robert Carpenter and a half-sister, Mabel Clady.
Friends may call from 1 – 1:55 pm on Friday, November 6 at Wise Funeral Service immediately followed by his memorial service beginning at 2:00 pm. He will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
If desired, donations can be made payable to Wounded Warrior Project and will be accepted through the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on his guestbook page at www.wisefuneral.com.
