Grace J. Sand

Grace J. Sand, 77, of rural Bucyrus died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.

She was born August 4, 1934 in Crawford County. Though she was born to the late Herbert and Modest (Miller) Hawkins, Grace had great love and respect for her stepdad, the late Arthur Hildebrand.

Grace was a 1952 graduate of Holmes Liberty High School and she has always enjoyed keeping in touch with fellow classmates, especially, most recently, when they would meet at Bob Evans on the second Tuesday of every month.

Grace married Elwood V. Rossman and together they farmed, raised a family and then she effortlessly cared for him until he died in the mid 1990's.

In the late 1990's she was reacquainted with Robert Sand who was a high school sweetheart while shopping at Foodtown. They both "conveniently" shopped at the same time and in 2001 they got married in Las Vegas unbeknownst to most of the family. Grace was described as the kindest individual one could ever meet and that showed as she accepted Bob's family as her own.

Grace loved animals and enjoyed watching and feeding the birds. She and Bob cooked together, fished at Lake Erie together and loved wintering in Naples, Fla.; although they both missed family and always were excited to return home. She loved attending the early service at the Bucyrus First Church of the Nazarene and rarely missed a Sunday.

She will be missed by her husband, Robert Sand of Bucyrus; her children, Gerry (Pam) Rossman of Bucyrus, Gail (Brian) Romans of Carey, Kurt Rossman of Bucyrus, Debra (Dennis) Cleland of New Washington, Laura Moyer of Powell, Timothy (Susan) Sand of Baltimore, Maryland, Robert Sand of Bucyrus and Jeremy (Amy) Sand of Hilliard; 18 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia (Carl) Mingus of Bucyrus, Phylis Nelson of California, Joyce (Ralph) Kennedy of Bucyrus and a sister-in-law, Suzanne Hawkins. Grace is preceded in death by her brother, Richard W. Hawkins.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 4 at Wise Funeral Service where the funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Ray LaSalle officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Church of the Nazarene or the Humane Society serving Crawford County through the funeral home.
