Glen Dale Beers, 73, of rural Bucyrus, died Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Galion Community Hospital following a battle with cancer.
Glen was born November 22, 1941 in Marion, Ohio to the late Roy and Lois (Clutter) Beers and was a 1959 graduate of Claridon High School where he played trumpet in the band, was a member of the football team and served as their class president. On September 22, 1962, he married Alice M. Frey who survives and holds onto all of the wonderful times spent together.
As a child Glen helped his grandparents on the farm and when he was a senior in high school, his family started their own farm which Glen devoted his life to. Through the years, he owned various types of livestock and loved working in the fields. More recently, he’s enjoyed the friendship formed from working with his neighbor and fellow farmer, Dan Grau. Glen loved the solitude that nature offered and when not farming, he loved cutting wood and just being outdoors.
Glen grew up in the Methodist church and when he married Alice, he joined Good Hope Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School to high school students, served on church council, sang with the choir and was song leader for the 9:15 service.
Glen was a very gifted trumpet player. He learned to play while in the second grade and by fourth grade, he was playing with the high school band. He’s played with various bands and individuals over the years and played in the Bucyrus Nazarene Church Orchestra for the past five years.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, Glen is survived by his daughter, Lori J. Beers of Peoria, Arizona and nephew, Jay Beers of London, England. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stanley Beers.
Glen’s family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, February 17 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. His funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Good Hope Lutheran Church with Pastor David Bliss and Pastor Keith Showalter officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Good Hope Steeple Fund or Bucyrus Nazarene Church for the music Dept. and these gifts can be given through the funeral home.
