Dwight F. Shumate Sr.

Dwight F. Shumate Sr., 89, died Thursday morning, August 27, 2026 at Carlisle Place under the care of Gentiva Hospice.

He was born in Wyandot County on October 28, 1936 to R. Franklin Shumate and Roma F. (Jurey) Thompson. Dwight grew up on family farms, helping as he learned. He played basketball for and graduated from Harpster High School. He went on to work for The Timken Co. in Bucyrus where he retired in 1996 as a supervisor. Dwight was married on November 7, 1964 to Doris I. Hayes and she preceded him in death in 1996.

Dwight will be remembered for his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. While in Ohio, he was active in Calvary Baptist Church and Gospel Baptist Church. He moved to Florida after the death of his wife where he was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church for 25 years, serving in their food pantry and going on several short-term mission trips. No matter where he found himself, Dwight pointed others to Jesus. He joined Calvary Baptist Church since returning to Ohio.

Dwight loved to travel and camp. Many summers were spent on Lake Erie camping, boating and fishing. He visited most of the USA along with Germany, Israel, Egypt, China, and Japan.

Dwight is survived by children, Steve (Carol) Shumate and Selina Shumate; grandchildren, Tabitha (Carl) Dye, Tami (Marty) Sutter, Jeff Hayes, Justine (John) Loesser, and Lacey (Casey) Davis; eight great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; sister, Kay Kavalets; along with nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to wife, Doris; Dwight was preceded in death father, Franklin and stepmother Nina Shumate; mother, Roma and stepfather Hobern Thompson; son, Dwight Jr. better known as Mike Shumate; and siblings, Keith Shumate, Janey Boyd, and Ed Thompson.

All services for Dwight Shumate will be held at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends on Sunday, August 30 from 2-4 pm. Funeral will be help on Monday, August 31 at 11:00 am with Pastor David Patrick officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
