Donald A. Miller

Don Miller, 87, of Bucyrus, died Friday, November 10, 2023 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

He was born January 4, 1936 in Tiffin, Ohio to the late Albert F. and Inez M. (Seiger) Miller. Don’s love of sports began early in life, and he excelled on the basketball court and football field while playing for the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes in high school. Following graduation, Don’s football career continued at Bowling Green State University where he went on to earn both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in School Administration. While at BGSU, he was also a member of Delta Tau Fraternity. On February 15, 1969, Don married Jeanne A. Culver, and they shared 43 years of marriage until her passing on May 19, 2012.

Don’s career in education began as a teacher in Fostoria followed by becoming a school principal in Martel as well as an assistant football coach. In the early 1960s, he was hired to serve as the principal of four elementary buildings: Nevada, Lykens, Holmes Liberty, and Mt. Zion, all of which became Wynford School District in 1963. He served as Wynford’s high school principal from 1978 until retiring in 1988. Don also served as an assistant football coach for 15 years.

Don was one of the most “loyal Royals” out there. He wanted Wynford to be the best school district in the area, both academically and athletically. He greeted his students every morning before school and was active in starting a spirit program as well as having a hand in many other school programs. He believed that school athletics developed discipline and responsibility as well as allowed students to feel part of something.  Don was present at about every football and/or basketball game, and if the school needed anything, he offered his support both physically and financially. He was proud to have been trained through the Ohio Violence Program and became a trainer for under-privileged youth in how to deal with situational issues. This led Don all over Ohio where he had a positive impact on many young lives.

Don’s life revolved around his family, and he was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He coached their teams while they were growing up and was their biggest supporter while watching their activities. They created countless memories while at their home on Crystal Lake in Michigan and shared many meals while dining out.

Don found enjoyment in the game of golf and, through his son, gained some great golf experiences. They played some prestigious courses over the years and had the privilege of working the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla. When retirement was upon him, his days began with a hearty breakfast at the Fox followed by a round of golf with friends at the Bucyrus Golf Club. He enjoyed many rounds over the years and formed many friendships along the way. In more recent years, Bridge became his game of choice and for the past several years he gathered with friends on Wednesdays and Fridays for cards and good times.

One of Don’s greatest accomplishments was his involvement with the Crawford County Sports Hall of Fame. He was an active participant since its inception and served as president of the committee for 10-plus years. Don was a member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge and the VFW. He proudly ushered for 14 years at the Ohio Stadium and enjoyed helping to cheer on many victories for his Buckeyes.

Don is survived by two children, Donald R. Miller and Jodi J. Miller; two grandchildren, Justin Miller and Elizabeth Miller, as well as many close friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Miller.

Calling hours for Don will be held from 3 – 7 pm Thursday, November 16, at Wise Funeral Service, where his service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, with Certified Celebrant Lisa Snyder officiating. He will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.

If desired, Don’s family would appreciate that donations be made payable to Wynford Athletic Boosters. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home and expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared at www.wisefuneral.com.
