Donald L. Matthews, 91, died late Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Bucyrus Community Hospital after months of failing health.
He was born August 25, 1932, the only child of the late Charles and Susie Matthews, and raised in Wyandot County. He met a young lady from Bucyrus named Ruth Briggs and they corresponded during his two years in the US Army. Don was stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict. After returning, Don and Ruth were married June 19, 1955. He got work at PPG in Crestline where he was a Glass Operator for 33 years before retirement.
Don had a lifelong love for cars. His vehicles were never dirty as he took excellent care of each car he owned, especially his prized silver 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V. Don belonged to a Continental Owners Club and the Eliminators Car Club. He was also a big sports fan, following NASCAR, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and Ohio State.
He not only took care of his cars, but people too. Though he never took to swimming, Don had a swimming pool he enjoyed keeping up for his family to use. Never one to get riled up, Don was a mild-mannered man who enjoyed his classic country music and seeing that everyone he loved was well cared for.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Matthews; children, Dave Matthews, Sue (Jeff) Bell, Gary (Esther) Matthews, Jodi Gaudaur, and Dale Matthews; grandchildren, Jason (Ashley) Roe, Craig (Julie) Roe, Mitch Roe, Chad Gaudaur (fiancée Kelsy Salzar), Kyle Gaudaur, Derek Gaudaur, Brent Matthews, and Ryan (Mary) Matthews; and great grandchildren, Ethan, Ella, Chase, Chance, and one soon expected. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by son-in-law, Kelly Gaudaur.
Services will be held on Wednesday, December 13 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 11 am – 12:55 pm and the funeral will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor David Smithey officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Donations can be made payable to a charity of the donor’s choice and given at the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on the guestbook.
