Donald Eugene Gibson, 74, of Bucyrus, died Friday, January 5, 2024 at Altercare of Bucyrus.

Don was born November 15, 1949 in Bucyrus to the late Russel E. and Florence W. (Ast) Gibson. He attended Col. Crawford Schools and in 1969, enlisted in the Navy, serving on the USS Conserver during Vietnam. In 1973, Don returned home and worked briefly as a security guard for Ohio Crane before fulfilling his passion of farming.  He loved working the land as well as tending to livestock and, after a hard day’s work, he found it most peaceful to sit on the front porch and view the fruits of his labors. Over the years, Don maintained a rather large garden and grew a variety of vegetables. When not in the fields or tending to his garden, Don, along with his boat, was off to Lake Erie to catch his limit of both perch and walleye. This led to many hours of cleaning and filleting, at which Don was rather gifted.

“Corn Field,” as Don was referred by his CB radio handle, enjoyed many conversations with friends and fellow CB enthusiasts. He was a huge Cleveland Browns fan and never changed the channel when an old western appeared on the TV. Don was thankful to have recently accepted God as his personal savior and enjoyed his visits with Pastor Becky Stephens.

Don was a member of VFW Post 1078, American Legion Post 181, AmVets Post 27, and the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his brother, James Gibson and wife Barbara; two nephews, Andrew Gibson and fiancée Stephanie and Matthew Gibson and wife Julie, as well as longtime fellow farming friends, Greg and Dawn Lutz and Matt and Ashley Lutz. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his aunt, Edith Bruce and his uncle, Ralph Gibson and wife Mary Alice.

Friends may call from 11 – 12 pm Wednesday, January 10 at Wise Funeral Service, where his funeral will follow at 12:00 pm with Pastor Becky Stephens officiating. Don will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery where Military Rites will be provided by the US Navy Honor Guard and the Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail.

Donations can be made payable to the Wounded Warrior Project and will be accepted through the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on his tribute wall.
