Charles F. Martin

Charles F. Martin, 92, died Tuesday morning, August 1, 2023 at Heritage of Hudson where he had resided for six years.

He was born in Bucyrus on September 1, 1930 to the late George C. and Carol (Neff) Martin. After moving to Liberty Twp. in fifth grade, Charles set his eyes on classmate Jannetta Stahl and never loved another. They graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1948 and were married September 3, 1950, sharing 66 years of marriage until her death on December 13, 2016. In addition to Charles’ full-time work on the Martin Family Farm, he was a welder, worked at Swan Rubber, and was an insurance adjuster. Charles was a longtime member of the former Zion UMC.

As a child, Charles loved animals and being adventurous. His family recalled the time they went to a meet and greet in Kenton with Gene Autry and Charles went missing. After a worrisome search, it was discovered he was with Mr. Autry’s horse, Champion, the whole time. Charles was very outgoing and could talk to anyone. He and Jannetta loved to travel and went all over the United States with Amish country and the Smoky Mountains being favorite destinations. When visiting Georgia, they attended church and sat in on President Carter’s Sunday School class. And who could forget the memorable encounter with a bear that Charles caught on film? Mostly, they loved to eat out and had several favorite restaurants they found on their journeys. At home, he was an avid reader of American history and enjoyed studying family history and attending reunions.

Charles is survived by children, Debra (Jerry) Stoffl of Aurora and John (Patty) Martin of Bucyrus; grandchildren, Amie (Brian) Caldwell, Eric Martin Wade, Jared Althouse, Tyler (Brittany) Althouse, Jerry (April) Stoffl, Christopher Stoffl, Britten (Tessa) Martin, Shelby Martin, and Bethany (Kyle) Rall; 16 great grandchildren; brother, James (Beverly) Martin; sister, Carol Ann (DeMont) Sponseller; along with many extended family.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by son, Charles David “Dave” Martin, and grandsons, Aaron Miller and Ryan Martin.
