Beverly J. Althouse

Beverly Jane Althouse, 90, of Bucyrus died early Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Walnut Crossing Senior Living in Marysville where she had resided since June.

She was born in Butler, Ohio on February 16, 1933, the third of seven children, to the late Harley P. and Mary M. (Leedy) Teeter. Beverly grew up on the family farm near North Liberty that was started by her great-great grandfather. She fostered a love for music at an early age when she listened to opera and classical pieces on WOSU radio and took both piano and voice lessons. After graduating from Butler High School in 1951, Bev studied music education at Otterbein College. She began teaching music at North Robinson where she met Marion Althouse, a fellow teacher, and they were married May 27, 1956 until he preceded her in death on March 23, 2006.

Beverly Althouse’s life will be remembered by her love for music and as a dedicated caregiver. In addition to teaching music, she was the choir director for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus where she also served on the worship committee, council, COTA, and was in the Lutheran Leader’s Class. Since moving into senior living, she was an encouraging voice to caregivers and volunteers. Over the years, Bev was also active in American University Women, Guiding Mothers League, King’s Daughters, Order of the Eastern Star (past worthy matron), Crawford County Retired Teachers Association, and a Bucyrus Hospital Volunteer.

Bev is survived by sons, Philip (Sue) Althouse of Marysville and Matthew Althouse of Bucyrus; grandson, Andrew (Jennifer) Althouse; great grandchildren, Lucy and Henry; sisters, Mary Lou Conger and Patricia (Lee) Bailey; sister-in-law, Lucy Teeter; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Joan (Don) Boyce, Donald Teeter, Bernice (Ron) Kearns, and Larry (Carolyn) Teeter, and brother-in-law, Dean Conger.
