Betty J. Makeever

Betty Jean Makeever, 93, died peacefully Saturday, February 24, 2024 at her home under the care of her family and Avita Hospice.

She was born December 21, 1930 in Marion to the late Robert and Mabel (Bilger) Noggle. The Noggles moved to Caledonia when Betty was a junior in high school. She was a cheerleader, played drums in the band, and participated in track and field. Betty also began dating 1948 Caledonia High School classmate Robert L. Makeever and they were married October 30, 1948. The Makeevers settled in Monnett where Betty was a homemaker and very active in the Monnett Mothers Club. When her children got older, Betty took great joy in driving bus for Wynford Schools and loved all the special trips she drove for and the relationships that were formed with the riders and families on her route.

Betty will be remembered for countless items crocheted with love for friends and family. She also made dolls, kept a large garden, did a lot of canning, and made scrumptious desserts like the cherished butterscotch pie she learned from her mother. Betty and Bob socialized over Euchre games, bowled in a doubles league, and, since 1975, enjoyed many summers at Lake Erie. After retirement, the RV moved south as Betty and Bob enjoyed wintering in Leesburg, Florida with many friends, both old and new. While there, they followed baseball, softball, and won a shuffleboard tournament. Otherwise, they have always stayed busy attending the sporting events of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her husband of 75 years, Bob Makeever; children, Debbie Kanable, Lyn (Janet) Makeever, Sue Oberlander, and Carol Makeever; grandchildren, Jeanne Kanable, Eric Kanable, Brittany Pratt (Andrew Miller), Matthew (Kim) Makeever, Kelly (Mark) Burke, Elise (David) Jones, John (Amanda) Oberlander, and Justin Oberlander; great grandchildren, Mia, Eric, Carson, Wyatt, Isaac, Noah, Micah, Leah, Louis, and William; brothers, Robert (Dixie) Noggle and Ted (Phyllis) Noggle; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by son-in-law, John Oberlander and sister, Mary Louise Finley.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 2 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 11 am – 12:55 pm and the funeral will begin at 1:00 pm with her sister-in-law, Phyllis Noggle officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations are encouraged to be made payable to Bucyrus Athletic Boosters, Wynford Athletic Boosters, or Avita Hospice and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on the guestbook.
