Anya E. Schell, 83, of Bucyrus, passed peacefully on December 30, 2025, surrounded by family. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, music, and steadfast love.
She was born on October 23, 1942 in Bucyrus, Ohio to the late Emery and Myrtle (Lotz) Cook. Anya was a 1960 graduate of Bucyrus High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in special education from Capital University. She also obtained a second master’s degree in theology from Trinity Lutheran Seminary.
Rooted in Bucyrus, Anya was a longtime member and organist at Good Hope Lutheran Church, where her artistry enriched countless services and celebrations. She also served as the music director at the First Presbyterian Church of Bucyrus, guiding choirs and congregations with grace, patience, and joy. In her vocation as a Special Education teacher, she was instrumental in helping build a strong foundation in area youth. Whether at the organ bench, directing a hymn or in front of a classroom, Anya's calling was to lift hearts.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Tani Erwin; Joel (Amie) Schell and their children Brady, Brendan, and Katelyn; Graham (Danielle) Schell and their children Milana and Colette.
She is also survived by her sisters Monica (Dennis) Scheidt and Paula (Mike) Romanoff and their families. Her numerous nieces and nephews will continue to honor AA through the love and traditions she cherished.
Anya was preceded in death by son, Brett Erwin.
Her family and friends will remember Anya for her quiet strength, her unwavering support, and the way music flowed naturally from her spirit into every season of life. Her legacy continues in the faith she modeled, the melodies she nurtured, and the memories she created with loved ones.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a future date; details will be shared by the family when available.
