Roger A. Moore

Roger A. Moore, 50, Mayor of the City of Bucyrus, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, May 20, 2014 at Bucyrus Community Hospital after having a heart attack.

He was born May 9, 1964 in Springfield, Ill. and adopted by the late Keith “Pops” and Anna Lee (Cross) Moore. The Moore family moved to Bucyrus when Roger was four and he graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1983. He married the former Fonda Fannin on June 1, 2002 and she survives. Roger worked as a grocer for Food Town before becoming a realtor, appraiser and auctioneer with Garberick Realty. He served two terms on the Bucyrus City Council before being elected Council President. He was elected Mayor in 2012.

Moore will be remembered by his family as dedicated, consistent and stable. He always had a smile on his face and greeted people with, “Good Morning” no matter what the time of day. A true public servant, Roger donated countless hours to fundraising for cancer research and hospice among other charities over the years. Although he experienced very little down time, Roger did enjoy a morning cup of coffee while feeding birds or squirrels and took pride in doing yard work and caring for flowers. He and Fonda looked forward to day trips to Lake Erie, visiting casinos and Amish Country and enjoying a nice dinner out. His collection of smiley faces will be remembered on realty and campaign signs throughout the community.

He was a member of Bucyrus Moose Lodge 669, Sons of The American Legion, and the former First Christian Church of Bucyrus. His work ethic was instilled by his mother and he worked hard for his city. He was pleased with the work on city streets and the spirit of cooperation between city departments and safety forces. He was also passionate for local schools, cleaning up crime and striving for more businesses to come to Bucyrus.

Roger is survived by his wife, Fonda Moore; three stepchildren, Dylan Gibson, Kristina Gibson and Natasha Grau; his great nephew, Owen Bradley; two grandchildren, Brayden Campbell and Carter Mills; aunt, Catherine Burling; brother, Keith (Julie) Moore; niece, Ashlee Moore and nephew, Garen Moore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncle, Donald Burling.

Mayor Moore will lie in state at Bucyrus City Hall, 500 S. Sandusky Ave., on Friday, May 23 where calling hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. His funeral will be at the Bucyrus Nazarene Church, 2165 Ohio 4, on Saturday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. with Gary Schiefer and Mike Corwin officiating. A procession will then make its way past City Hall to Washington Square en route to Oakwood Cemetery for burial.
