December 24, 1933 — December 14, 2018

Robert E. Long

Bob Long, 84, of Bucyrus, died peacefully at his residence on Friday, December 14, 2018.

He was born December 24, 1933 in Crestline, Ohio to the late Fred R. and Catherine R. (Ramsey) Long. Bob was a 1951 graduate of Shelby High School and that same year enlisted to serve in the US Air Force. He proudly served during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1955 and was stationed for 18 months in Okinawa. Bob returned home and on May 25, 1956 he married Beverly Y. Heath whom he’d met prior to enlistment. They shared 61 years of marriage until her death in 2017.

Bob worked at the Shelby Depot for two years before hiring in with the US Postal Service in 1958. He worked as a clerk, a superintendent of mail and finished his career as a rural letter carrier, retiring in 1990.

Earlier in life, Bob was active in raising, training and racing homing pigeons and he also spent a lot of time, hunting pheasants and fishing. He will be remembered as an avid bowler and he also enjoyed golfing. It was important that his yard was well maintained, and he could often be found in his vegetable garden. In more recent years he just “puttered around” and enjoyed being retired. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, VFW 1078, AMVETS 27, American Legion Post 181, Bucyrus Moose and Bucyrus Elks Lodge.

He is survived by two sons, Mitch (Sandy) Long and Ty (Wanda) Long both of Bucyrus; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley (Larry) Salser and Sandra Au and sisters-in-law, Judie Long and Eileen Lust. Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Donald L. Long.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 18 at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor Mike Greenler officiating. Military Rites will be observed by the US Air Force and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.

Donations can be made payable to the Humane Society Serving Crawford County and will be accepted at the cemetery (morning of his funeral) or at the Wise Funeral Service. Memories are encouraged to be shared on his Tribute Wall.
