Opal Hussey

R. Opal Hussey, 97, died Friday, December 7, 2018 at her home.

She was born September 15, 1921 in Glasgow, Kentucky to the late John and Rosa (McCubbin) Ford. Soon thereafter, her family moved to the area and Opal graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1939.

On September 28, 1941 she married Walter Burke Hussey and his work took them to Lorain, Ohio in the 1950s. He died in 1977 and Opal returned to Bucyrus in 1980s to care for her sister. Around this time, she met Floyd Cartwright and they enjoyed each other’s companionship until his death in 2000. They traveled the country with friends in the Happy Travelers Club and played many games of euchre on multiple nights of the week with anyone interested in a game. But what made Opal the happiest was time spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She touched a lot of lives over the years and will always be remembered as “grandma” to many friends of the family.

Opal was formerly active at First Baptist Church in Bucyrus. To keep busy, she was always doing circle word puzzles and could often be found with a bowl of ice cream and a warm cup of tea.

She will be missed by her daughter, Kim (Sam) Smith of Bucyrus; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren and one daughter-in-law.

She was preceded in death by three children, Larry Hussey, Claudia Doughty and Valerie Jo Quisenberry; two grandchildren, Nathaniel Smith and Tony Witt as well as four siblings.

A graveside funeral will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 11 at Oceola Cemetery. Donations can be made payable to Wise Funeral Service to offset expenses.
