Nevin J. Gilliland

Nevin Gilliland, 82, died Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at his home following a brief illness.



He was born September 10, 1935 in Little York, Wyandot County, the son of the late Chester and Gladys (Harriger) Gilliland.



Nevin worked with family on the farm for many years and retired from Swan Rubber after 45 years. He was first married to Beverly (Hord) Spiegel, the mother of his children, and she survives. In 1997, Nevin married Kathleen “Susie” Stuckert and she preceded him in death in 2003.



Nevin loved following his family in their sporting events and various activities. Anything that had to do with John Wayne had his undivided attention and Nevin loved watching his Indians, Buckeyes, and even the Browns when they were in action. Nevin saw to it that his yard was immaculately cared for and only recently would he allow anyone else the opportunity of mowing it. He enjoyed a good meal, often uttering his famous words, “When we gonna eat?”



He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bucyrus and Moose Lodge 669. Nevin was a quiet and simple man who lived by the words of John Wayne, “Talk low, talk slow and don’t say too much.”



Nevin is survived by four children, Randy Gilliland, Gary Gilliland, Allan (Anita) Gilliland, and Jacquelyn (Richard) Counts; six grandchildren, Samantha Gilliland, Brady Gilliland, Dereck Gilliland, Jarrod Gilliland, Tyler Counts, and Kayla Counts; seven great grandchildren; as well as two nieces, Deb (Roger) Pinion and Linda (Roger) Jury. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy, Homer, and Gerald Gilliland and a sister, Virginia Thomas.



His family will receive friends from 10 – 11:55 am Friday, August 10 at Wise Funeral Service and his funeral will follow at 12 Noon with Pastor Jeremy McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
