Miriam L. Holtshouse

Miriam L. Holtshouse, 89, of Bucyrus, died peacefully Wednesday morning, March 4, 2015 at Carlisle Place.

She was born August 2, 1925 in Crane Twp., Wyandot County to the late Alfred Gail and Irene (Swan) Wilson. Miriam was a 1943 graduate of Upper Sandusky High School and on May 4, 1947 she married Charles A. Holtshouse who preceded her in death on February 28, 2004.

Miriam raised her family as a homemaker until the mid-1960s when she decided to further her education. She attended The Ohio State University along with her son and they graduated together in 1971. Miriam put to use her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education by teaching 4th and 6th grades at Whetstone School until retiring in the early 90s.

Miriam was very supportive of the programs her children were involved in and also various other organizations in which she either assisted with her time or financially.  There were many Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout events; Miriam served as the Executive Director for the American Cancer Society; Assistant Pool Director at both Aumiller and Col. Crawford swimming pools; the American Red Cross, Lowe Volk Park and Harvey School and was a longtime member of Woodlawn UMC where she was active in the Builders Sunday School Class.

Miriam had a green thumb and loved working with flowers or growing a variety of vegetables in her different gardens. She was a recipient of the Master Gardener Award for dedication to the craft. Another passion was her collection of Presbyterian dolls, many of which have been donated to the First Presbyterian Church. Miriam liked following local history and though she retired from teaching, she never wasted a teachable moment with her grandchildren or great grandchildren with whom she enjoyed spending time. She and Charles were also fortunate enough to have traveled the world together and learned about many different cultures.

She is survived by three children, Thomas (Pam) Holtshouse, Judith L. Flynn and Sally Hildreth; five grandchildren, Maera (Randy) Ohlemacher, Hiliary Holtshouse Patriok and her husband, Steve, Amy Holtshouse Brennan and her husband, Dan, Mindy Hildreth and Molly Hildreth; four great grandchildren, Kaden Buckner, Hayley Shepherd, Landon Zornes and Caitlyn Ohlemacher. Also surviving is her brother, Jack Wilson of Upper Sandusky and sister, Lillian McClain of Toledo.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Wilson; sister, Virginia Schwabel; two brothers-in-law, Carl Schwabel and Ed McClain and sister-in-law, Laura Wilson.

Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 6 at Wise Funeral Service where Miriam’s funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Sarah Macdonald officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Harvey School, Lowe Volk Park or Woodlawn UMC through the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be left at www.wisefuneral.com.
