Kevin Alt

Kevin M. Alt, 40, a man who believed in being kind to everyone, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born December 16, 1974 in Galion, Ohio and was raised in Bucyrus where, at home one evening at a young age, he prayed the prayer of salvation with his mother and soon afterwards was baptized at Enterprise Baptist Church in Marion, Ohio.

He attended school at Bucyrus through grade 11 where he played basketball and loved socializing with fellow students. Kevin graduated from Tiffin Columbian in 1993 and went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University and his master’s degree in education from Wayne State University. He used his knowledge to help others; teaching mostly elementary education at various schools in the Detroit area before moving back to Bucyrus where he substitute taught for schools in Crawford County.

Kevin’s life revolved around sports. He and his dad shared some special times playing basketball and riding their bikes and he could always find a friend to play some racquetball, golf or shoot pool. Kevin ran some 5k’s with his sister and he loved following his Buckeyes and Cleveland sports teams.

Kevin’s philosophy on life was to be a kind person and he certainly had a big heart. He was always able to help a family member or friend in their time of need and, through this journey called life, he learned to appreciate good people and the little things. He never took anyone or anything for granted. Kevin loved listening to music, walking his dog, Rocky, catching lightning bugs with his niece, Keira and relaxing on his front porch with a cigar. He also cherished weekends spent with mom, Kathy and Mar playing euchre and laughing.

He will be greatly missed by his mother, Judy (Mellott) Hoffman and her husband Mike; father, Walter Alt and his wife, Gail; sister, Rachel (Jason) Dunfee; stepsiblings, Natalie Hoffman and Robert Hoffman; nieces, Keira and Lyncoln Dunfee; nephew, Drayden Gimlich; many aunts, uncles and cousins including one very close uncle, JR Mellott and his very close cousin, Amanda Mellott. Kevin is also survived by his grandparents, Alice Alt and Jessie Mellott-Mason.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Harold E. Mellott, Myrna (Spann) Mellott and Urban Alt along with an uncle, Bruce Fannin.

Friends are encouraged to wear their favorite OSU wear when attending calling hours or Kevin’s funeral service. Go Bucks! His family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 19 at Wise Funeral Service where his funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday with Pastor Kathy Laird officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where Pastor Ray LaSalle will officiate the ceremony.

Memorial contributions are encouraged to be left to the Michael Taylor Foundation, an organization formed to help those with a need. These contributions may be given at the funeral home. Memories are certainly encouraged to be left in the Memorial Guestbook below.
