Jewell Belcher

Jewell Belcher, 92, of Bucyrus died Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2016 at Bucyrus Community Hospital with nearly all her loving family nearby.



She was born April 13, 1924 in Hensley, West Virginia to the late Elis Thornsberry and Darkus Shaw. Her mother married the late Clarence White and they raised Jewell until she married Quinton A. Belcher, Sr., whom she had met at the movie house, on December 25, 1937. They later moved to Chicago before returning to West Virginia and then settling in Bucyrus in 1955. Quinton worked at Swan Rubber and Jewell raised her family and worked as a homemaker. He preceded her in death February 15, 1987.



Jewell was a loving, gentle mother and grandmother who loved having company in her home. She was a member of Gospel Baptist Church where she enjoyed the Young at Heart group and their bus trips and also loved taking drives with her late sister-in-law, Lillian Belcher. She volunteered as a “Grey Lady” at Bucyrus Community Hospital in the 1970s. When she was younger she enjoyed going to the movie theater and later watched soap operas and game shows on television. Many birds had their fill from her feeders and fellow residents at Maplecrest enjoyed birdwatching with her in her room.



Jewell is survived by three children, Gene (Virginia) Belcher, Reta (Gary) King, and Quinton (Marie) Belcher, Jr., all of Bucyrus; eight grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her husband of 49 years and her parents, she was preceded in death by three infant children.



The Belcher family will receive friends on Monday, August 22 from 11 am – 12:50 pm at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where the funeral will begin at 1:00 pm with her grandson-in-law, Paul Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
