Jack Starcher, 86, died peacefully Friday morning, October 29, 2021 at his son’s home.



The youngest child of the late Roy F. and Mina M. (Workman) Starcher was born Dale Jackson Starcher on April 24, 1935 in Barberton. Jack graduated from Norton High School in 1953 where he excelled in sports, being selected to the All-Metropolitan League football team as a senior.



After graduation, he worked for Bell Telephone and Akron Porcelain Factory. In August 1956, he entered the State Highway Patrol Academy and graduated in November. He was first stationed at the Lorain Patrol Post and was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and honorably discharged in 1960. He returned to the highway patrol being stationed at the Circleville Patrol Post. He was promoted to the rank of corporal in 1968 and transferred to the Bucyrus Patrol Post. He was then promoted to the rank of sergeant and retired in November 1980. Two weeks after retiring from the patrol, he went to work at the Crawford County Municipal Court as the bailiff and probation officer under three different judges, retiring in 2002. In June 2005, he went to work at Crawford County Council on Aging as a transportation driver and retired from there in 2020.



Jack was married to the former Patricia J. Berry on August 29, 1975. He will be remembered as a fun-loving, personable guy. He was the favorite uncle to many, always loved to be around people, and people loved being around Jack. When younger, he was an avid water skier and his family cherished weekends and vacations on Lake White. He and Pat enjoyed traveling with Catalina Island, New Orleans, and Bahamas being among his favorite destinations. He was an active part of his kids and grandkids and loved supporting them at their events. At home, he kept a huge garden, was a great cook, followed the Buckeyes, Browns, and Indians, and loved company of his best friend and canine companion, Sophie.



Jack is survived by his bride of 46 years, Pat Starcher; daughters, Jackie (Brad) Buckey and Leslie (Karl) Roehrig; sons, John (Amy) Neubacher and Matt (Amy) Neubacher; grandchildren, John Knight, Jessica (Shawn) McCullough, Linda Buckey, Erin Roehrig, Connor Roehrig, Jakob Roehrig, Clay “CJ” Neubacher, Matthew (Alexis) Neubacher II, Colten Neubacher, Audrey Neubacher, and Austin Neubacher; six great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Sophie.



In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his grandson, Chase Neubacher and siblings, Juanita Millhoff, Glenn Starcher, Harold Starcher, Arthur Starcher, and Roy Jr.



All services for Jack will take place at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus on Friday, November 5. His family will receive friends from 4-5:55 pm. The funeral will begin at 6:00 pm with Tom Walker officiating and conclude with rites by the OSHP Honor Guard. At a later date, Jack will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.



Rather than flowers, the Starchers encourage memorial donations be made payable to the OSHP Benefit Fund and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Jack’s Tribute Wall.
