Donald F. Lust

Donald F. Lust, 85, of Bucyrus, died Sunday, May 1, 2016 at OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus following a brief illness with his wife, daughter, Jo Ellen and son, Robert by his side.

Don was born April 1, 1931 in Bucyrus on the Lust homestead where he spent his early years. He learned the value of hard work by taking on a paper route and sweeping floors at Kime Lumber following the death of his father when he was 14. Don went on to graduate from Bucyrus High School in 1949. On October 15, 1950 he married Mary Ellen Tallman, whom he met at a cookout, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

Don worked as a mechanic at both the Ford and Wilson Garages and also repaired tractors at the Farm Bureau before becoming a licensed insurance agent and working at Prudential in Bucyrus for 38 years where he created many strong friendships. Not being able to sit still, Don helped The Car Guys with general duties and was proud to have assisted Mark Yosick, Lyle Gebhardt, and Mike Zahn with auctions.

Don’s extraverted personality led him to many rewarding experiences and he knew no strangers. He and Mary Ellen loved being active in the lives of their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed camping, taking day trips to Amish Country and Lake Erie, eagle watching, and learning of local history and genealogy. Don enjoyed woodworking, going to horse shows and he was always eager to help is nephew, Jim, on the farm when called to do so.

Don was a past member and president of the Bucyrus Band Parents, an eagle nest monitor for the State of Ohio and an active member for both the Bucyrus Historical Society, where he and Mary Ellen were longtime curators, and the Crawford County Genealogical Society where he’s devoted many hours of service.

In addition to Mary Ellen Lust, his wife of 65 years, Don is survived by three children, Robert (Julie) Lust, Jo Ellen (Dan) Cobb, and Ned (Charla) Lust; three grandchildren, Jason (Lisa) Scott, Corey Lust, and Courtney (Zachary) Osborn; four great grandchildren, Owen and Sarah Scott and Sarah and Laura Osborn; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold J. and Alvina K. (Baumgartner) Lust and four siblings, Richard Lust, Elva Mae Daiber, Lois Schnarrenberger, and Kenneth Lust.

His family will gather with friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at Wise Funeral Service. A private funeral service will be held in Oakwood Cemetery where he will be buried close to his parents.

Don had a great love of wildlife and his family requests donations be given to either Wildlife Haven, Crawford Park District, or a Humane Society of one’s choosing through the funeral home.
