Clarence Austin

Clarence Austin, Jr., 90, of Bucyrus, died peacefully Saturday, March 7, 2015 at his residence.

He was born August 24, 1924 in Marion, Ohio to the late Clarence D. and Lalla (Powell) Austin. Clarence learned the value of hard work at a young age by leaving school early to help care for the family. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he proudly enlisted in the US Navy and served until 1945. Upon his return home, he took a job with the Corps of Engineers which later became the Railroad, where he worked until he became disabled. Clarence dabbled with odd jobs but found a love for painting and in the late 1980s opened the Peanut Gallery in Mt. Victory. This joy of painting landscapes, animals and portraits lasted until his eyesight no longer allowed him to do so.

Clarence married Alice McCombs in 1945 and they enjoyed many nights of dancing, a short time traveling but mostly they enjoyed being homebodies together until her death in 2003. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, occasionally fished and loved tinkering with things around the home.

He is survived by one son, Craig Austin of Bucyrus; three grandchildren, Amy (Tim) Austin-Kinler, Brandy (Westley) Morgan and Amber (Aaron) Gerstenberger; six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are some very close friends, Debbie, Elizabeth, Mo and Lana. He was preceded in death by one son, Danny H. Austin.

No public services will be held for Clarence and a memorial service is being planned for a later date.  Memorial contributions can be given to Hospice of North Central Ohio through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820 who assisted with his arrangements. Expressions of sympathy can be left in the Memorial Guestbook below.
