Betty Mae Gorsuch

Betty Mae Gorsuch, 95, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2018 at Ohio Living Westminster-Thurber in Columbus.

She was born February 8, 1923 to the late Mina Mae (Proctor) and Frank L. Gorsuch in Ravenna. After moving to Bucyrus in 1931, her parents started an Insurance Agency, Gorsuch Insurance.

Betty was a 1941 graduate of Bucyrus High School. She worked in the insurance agency and for JC Penney before enrolling at Bowling Green State University and graduating in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration. Betty enjoyed a long career as a teacher, first teaching elementary school in Michigan for seven years in South Haven and a year in Mt. Clemons. In 1961 she moved back to Bucyrus where she taught elementary school until the fall of 1969, when she began teaching American Government at Bucyrus High School. She enjoyed staying up-to-date with politics and news in order to influence and educate her students in practical and positive ways. She retired in 1985 and moved to Columbus in 1995, where she was an active member of the Thurber Community, creating the Corner Gallery Bulletin Boards. During most of her adult years in Bucyrus, Betty was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church on Ridgeton Road.

Betty will be remembered as an amazing teacher, cherished friend and a much-admired lady. She also brightened the lives of many through her single carnation or random $2.00 bill gifts to former students and friends over the years.

Betty is survived by her brother, Leonard (Kristi) Gorsuch of Lancaster and nieces, Jennifer Walters, Elizabeth Whipple, Alison Gorsuch, Kathryn Gorsuch, and Mary Francis Gorsuch.

Family, friends and others whose lives Betty touched are invited to gather and share memories with one another from 2-3:55 pm SUNDAY, AUGUST 26 at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820 where her memorial service will begin at 4:00 pm that day with Pastor Paul Cannon officiating. A private burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made payable to Crawford Park District or Bucyrus Public Library and these gifts will be accepted through the funeral home.
