Arlene R. Slagle

Arlene Rose Slagle, 74, of Bucyrus, died Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Altercare of Bucyrus following a lengthy bout with Parkinson’s disease.

She was born February 2, 1941 in New Washington to the late Leo J. and Eleanor K. (Smith) Pifher. She grew up attending Mother of Sorrows Catholic grade school and graduated from New Washington High School.

Arlene was formerly married to Jim Slagle and cared for her family as a homemaker. She loved being around children; so much that she decided to make a career of watching them. “Nannie,” as she was known by so many, spent over 30 years caring for little ones and as those children grew and began families, she also watched their children. Even after she stopped babysitting, Nannie was always glad to have her grandchildren and great grandchildren over for special time. She took great pleasure in cooking for her family, especially during holidays, and her fried chicken and meatloaf were family favorites. Nannie also liked to sew and craft and will be remembered by many for her crafty glitter shirts which she shared with family and friends.

Arlene was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and also a member of the American Legion and AMVETS Women’s Auxiliaries along with Women of the Moose.

She is survived by four children, Marla (Bill) Smith, Jim (Jodi) Slagle, Kathy (Ray) Radcliff and Chad (Kriste) Slagle all of Bucyrus and 11 grandchildren, Paul Alan Stander, Eric (Kylene) Stander, Amanda Slagle, Jason (Brittany) Slagle, Kade Slagle, Allison (Lane) Tucker, Mackenzie Radcliff, Chloe Radcliff, Raelyn Radcliff, Brooke Slagle and Hailey Slagle; two step-grandchildren, Sarah Smith and Emily Smith and nine great grandchildren plus one arriving very soon.  Arlene is also survived by her brother, Norman “Joe” (Carol) Pifher of Toledo and sister, Barb (Dewey) Isaac of McConnells, South Carolina; several nieces and nephews and a special goddaughter, Rhonda Werner of Rock Hill, South Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Gene Pifher and Thomas “Buzz” Pifher and his wife, Helen Pifher. Also preceding her in death was her close friend, Ronald Mills, with whom she shared many fun times.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 17 at Wise Funeral Service where her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in Lust Cemetery, Chatfield.

Memorial contributions may be given to HomeCare Matters Hospice or the Altercare Activities Dept. through the funeral home.
