Wayne E. Walterhouse

Wayne E. Walterhouse, 90, of Bucyrus died peacefully Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Bucyrus Community Hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia.

He was born in Bucyrus October 9, 1927 to the late Gerald and Florence (McKnight) Walterhouse. He attended Bucyrus Schools before graduating from Mount Vernon Academy in 1945. He went on to study education at Emmanuel Missionary College in Michigan and was stationed in Korea during his service in the Army from 1950-52. He was reacquainted with Betty Alcorn, whom he had met in college, and they were married August 9, 1954. They settled in Bucyrus and Wayne worked for the Eaton Corp. in Marion for over 30 years. In retirement, he volunteered at the court house and read to children at the Council on Aging.

Wayne will be remembered for his humble spirit and servant’s heart. Every day of his life was about doing good and doing God’s work. He was an active member of the Bucyrus Seventh-Day Adventist Church where he served as head elder, treasurer, and led singing. He loved the water and enjoyed traveling anywhere he could go swimming. At home, he loved tending to his gardens and was a great cook, especially baking his famous yellow cake with cooked chocolate frosting.

He loved time spent with his children and grandchildren and the games he made up were far more memorable than those bought from a store. He seldom missed being there for any of his family’s activities and could be counted on to lend a hand to friends and neighbors.

Wayne is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Betty Walterhouse; daughter, Cynthia (Skip) McKinney; son, Lyndell (Tammy) Walterhouse; foster daughter, Theresa LaFontaine; grandchildren, Cindi Ann McKinney, Dion McKinney, Anthony (Shyann) McKinney, and Whitney Walterhouse; great grandchildren, Skye, Cole, Jack, and Jill Milner and Marshall and Maxwell McKinney; great-great grandson, Zandyn; brothers, Donald Walterhouse and Ronnie Parsel; sister, Marie Langlois; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lois (Clyde) Melton and Janet Slabaugh-Staton; brothers-in law, John Slabaugh, Carl Staton, and Dave Langlois; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Walterhouse and Rhonda Parsel.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 24 at 1:00 pm at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus with Pastor Marcellus de Oliveira officiating. Friends may call prior to the service from 11:30-12:50. Burial will follow in Little Sandusky Cemetery where military rites will be provided by the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.

Contributions may be made payable to Bucyrus Seventh-Day Adventist Church and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Wayne’s Tribute Wall.
