Rev. Robert D. Hughes

Rev. Robert Hughes was born August 1, 1927 in Bucyrus, Ohio to Hugh T. and Reba (Craner) Hughes. He graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1945, Denison University in 1950 and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1954. He preached his first sermon at the age of 14 in his grandfather’s church. After seminary, he pastored churches in Marietta, Painesville, Loudonville, Attica and Cuyahoga Falls. From 1967-1977 he worked for Children’s Services in Lake and Trumbull counties while doing several short interims. After he retired in 1991 he served as interim pastor in 23 churches in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. He also was a substitute teacher at Seneca East High School in Attica, Ohio in the early 80s.



Robert was a member of Attica Lodge #367 F&AM and the Rotary Clubs of Attica and Cuyahoga Falls. He was very active in the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association. He was instrumental in starting the American Baptist Churches of Ohio Lay Pastor Training Program.



He is survived by his wife of 67 years, R. Kathleen (Stephenson) originally of Ironton, Ohio; his children, Stephanie (Steve) Colton, Gwen Peterman, David, Heidi (Robert) Carr, Laurie Yeckle, Daniel, and Gretchen (Greg) Fiocca; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother, Harry Hughes and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Anderson, son-in-law Julius Yeckle and sister, Marilyn Harrer.



Calling hours will be at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church, 4872 Darrow Rd., Stow 44224 on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 6-8 pm and Wednesday, Sept. 13 from 9-10 am followed by funeral services at 10 am. Graveside services will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Bucyrus Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 pm followed by memorial visitation at Wise Funeral Home, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus from 3-4 pm.
