Larry G. Heid

Larry G. Heid, 75, of Bucyrus died of complications from pneumonia on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born in Bucyrus on September 1, 1941 to the late Walter R. and Clara B. (Walter) Heid. He was a very active boy, playing every sport he could, active in scouts, and never home before dark. In August 1953, Larry contracted polio and was treated for several month at Columbus Children’s Hospital where doctors diagnosed him as “a hopeless polio case.” The disease affected Larry’s ability to walk, leaving him bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. A life which proved to be anything but hopeless.

After graduating from Bucyrus High School in 1959, Larry went to the Woodrow Wilson Vocational Rehabilitation School in Virginia where he learned to take good care of himself physically and studied business and accounting. He worked for Holtshouse Plumbing & Heating for over 20 years, Servpro of Crawford County and, after retiring, his doctor suggested Larry get back in the workforce to keep his crippling hands busy so he worked at the Crawford County Landfill as a clerk until retiring once again. Always a hard worker, Larry volunteered for a number of organizations including the Jaycees, Bratwurst Festival committee, Advisor to Air Explorer Posts 102 and 113, officer and Fellow of Moose Lodge 669, and poster child for Easter Seals. He was an Eagle Boy Scout, elected to Bucyrus City Council, and a member of Scioto United Methodist Church. Larry was a lifelong sports fan and great with numbers. He seldom missed a Bucyrus Redmen football game and he kept statistics for BHS basketball for 40 years, always there to wish the Redmen luck with a high five as the lineups were announced.

Larry was amazing, feisty, courageous and an inspiration who will be missed by his brothers, Richard Heid and Jim (Lois) Heid of Bucyrus; nieces and nephews, Michelle (Mike) Buchta, Michael (Jaime) Heid, and Angie (Tim) Streeter; great nephews and niece, Cameron Streeter, Zachary Buchta, and Colette Heid; uncle, Eldon (Carol) Walter; many cousins and countless friends.

Respects can be paid at Wise Funeral Service on Tuesday, March 21 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm with a Moose Tribute Service at 6:00 pm. Funeral services will be at Scioto United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Pastor Julie Fairchild officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations are suggested to be made payable to Scioto UMC or Bucyrus Academic Boosters (for the Larry Heid Scholarship) and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Larry’s Tribute Wall.
