Harold
S. Pollock, 91, of 500 Wedgewood Ct., Bucyrus, passed away peacefully
Monday afternoon, January 11 at Galion Community Hospital surrounded
by his loving family. He lived a full and blessed life.
Harold was born
on November 16, 1918 in the Brokensword area of Crawford County.
His father was Orville R. Pollock and his mother was Valeria (Sheaffer)
Pollock. Harold graduated from Holmes Liberty School in 1938 and
was Vice President of his class. After graduation he worked for
Dallas Musser Egg & Poultry and also drove school bus for Holmes
Liberty School.
Harold was called
to serve in the U.S. Army in April 1942 and received his basic training
at Camp Crowder, Missouri. From there he and his fellow soldiers
left for Camp Gordon, Georgia where they formed the 812 Non-Combat
Signal Corp.
On January 2,
1943 Harold married Dorothy Kepler, whom he had met back in Bucyrus
after high school. They had a military wedding at Camp Gordon, Georgia.
They were newlyweds for just a short time as Harold shipped overseas
in March 1943.
Harold's tour
of duty started in Casablanca, Africa then on to Naples, Italy and
on to Rome for ten weeks of infantry training. He was assigned to
the 149th Infantry Company on the front line until the Germans surrendered.
Shortly after the surrender, he was transferred to the 55th Signal
Corp Battalion headed for Japan. But the war with Japan ended and
his ship headed into Boston, Massachusetts. Harold was discharged
in October 1945 and homeward bound.
When he returned
to Bucyrus, he worked at Sonzonian Vault, Huber Warco and Marion
Army Corps of Engineer Depot. As the Marion Depot closed its doors
in the early 1960's, Harold was then transferred to the Granite
City, Illinois Army Engineer Corp for two years and then to St.
Louis, Missouri Engineer Corp for one year. An opportunity arose
that Harold could return to the Defense Construction Supply Center
in Columbus where he worked until his retirement in 1981.
Harold and Dorothy
have one son, Gary L. (Cheryl) Pollock of London, Ohio and one daughter,
Joanne R. (Doug) Weisenauer of Lykens; seven grandchildren, Clint
(Liz) Pollock of Lusby, Maryland, Angel (Daniel) Estigoy of Okinawa,

and Calvin Pollock; one sister, Virginia Volkmer and a sister-in-law,

Since his retirement,
Harold enjoyed going to auctions and became a collector of antique
tools and machinery. He was especially proud of his gasoline hit-and-miss
engines and loved working with copper wire. Harold was a member
of Grace United Methodist Church where he had served as usher and
was a past president of his Sunday School Class.
