James Edward Butt, Sr., 78, of Bucyrus, died January 25 at Autumnwood Nursing Home in Tiffin.

Mr. Butt was born on October 14, 1931 in Canton to the late Curtis and Mary Elizabeth (Carroll) Butt. He was a 1950 graduate of Lehman High School and a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the U.S.S. Greene from 1951-1953. For the majority of his life, Jim worked in the transportation industry. He served on the Bucyrus Community Development Board, and was a former president for Bucyrus Civil Service.

Mr. Butt is survived by his special companion, Mary Brown of Sycamore; sons, James E. Butt, Jr. of New Washington, John C. Butt of Bucyrus and son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Chris Butt of Bucyrus; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean Anne and Eric Johns of Bloomville; grandchildren, Jessica Gossard, Joel Butt, Katie Butt, Cory Butt, Rachel Pifer and Derrick Pifer; nephews, Richard White, Jr., Jeffrey White, and Scott White; and a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Richard White of Canton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly (Yarman) Butt in 1985 and two children, Timothy and Thomas Butt.

Mr. Butt was a member of the American Legion Post 181, Moose 669, and Knights of Columbus. Among the things he enjoyed were coaching minor league baseball, traveling and spending time with his companion Mary, and watching his grandchildren participate in their sports and other activities.

Friends may call Thursday, January 28 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be observed Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Full military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 181. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society.
